Some things leave without making a sound; only their weight grows lighter, little by little. Burning causes matter to leave its original form, while time leaves behind a trace that can be seen.
A Little Weight consists of a burning incense stick and a milligram scale.
Once lit, the flame continuously consumes the incense. The scale records this process: the number gradually decreases as the incense burns, until it reaches zero.
Burning is ordinarily a process that is difficult to perceive with precision. Smoke, scent, and heat continually leave the incense, yet are difficult to see or measure. Through the scale, the work transforms these minute and continuous changes in matter into visible numbers, allowing “consumption” to become a way of seeing time as it passes.
The incense grows lighter, the number decreases, and the burning itself continues to take place.
In the end, the zero left on the display can only prove that A Little Weight once existed.
