This is an artistic presentation that merges two worldviews: the cosmological vision of Tibetan Buddhism meets the modern scientific model of Earth.
The Tibetan Buddhist cosmology, centered around the symbolic Mandala of Mount Sumeru, depicts a hierarchical world with the sacred mountain at its core, surrounded by continents in an orderly arrangement. Modern science, on the other hand, presents an objective globe model that reveals the physical entirety of the blue planet we inhabit. Though seemingly distant, both perspectives ultimately seek to answer the same fundamental question: What is the true nature of the world we live in?
The "Thangka Globe" is born from this contemplation. We have collaborated closely with Thangka intangible cultural heritage bearers, who have personally applied their thousand-year-old planar painting techniques to a three-dimensional spherical surface for the first time. Each heritage bearer strictly adheres to traditional methods while overcoming the new challenges of recomposing and scaling designs on a curved surface. Every piece is a dual practice of brushwork and faith.
To ensure the sustainable transmission of this precious craft, we provide stable income to the bearers through product sales, document and share their creative processes using digital technology, and leverage this innovative medium to help a broader audience recognize and respect their work. We believe that true preservation goes beyond recording techniques—it is about empowering bearers to sustain their creative practice in contemporary society.
This is more than an artistic innovation; it is a modern practice of cultural transmission. Through this tangible and engaging medium, ancient wisdom enters into dialogue with contemporary understanding, allowing Thangka art to延续 its vitality in a new form and enabling the skill and dedication of the bearers to gain new life and reach through modern design.
