Himalayan Attire Heritage: A Contemporary Vision

What began as a journey of cultural preservation evolved into an in-depth creative endeavor that blended fieldwork with visual storytelling. Commissioned by the Department of Culture of the Tibet Autonomous Region in 2019, our team traveled across all prefectures of Tibet, delving into regions inhabited by Tibetan, Monpa, Lhoba, and other ethnic groups. We systematically recorded the ways of wearing, sizing standards, and color details of traditional attire from the Himalayan region. Yet our work went beyond mere documentation. In Kejia Village of Purang County, the ancient "Peacock Costume" inspired our creative vision. Through the lens, we reinterpreted its essence, allowing the garments to converse with their wearers amidst the highland light and shadow. This series of visual works was honored with the ICVA 2020 International Visual Arts Council Award.

The rich data accumulated during the fieldwork formed the foundation for reinvention. We extracted and constructed a unique "Himalayan Color System," transforming traditional patterns into a modern design language and revitalizing dormant heritage. The entire process was a practice of cultivating artistic expression from the solid roots of fieldwork. Using visual art as a bridge, we connected the past and future of this land, demonstrating that true preservation lies in respectful understanding and bold reinterpretation.
