Metal candelabra, Chinese incense sticks

Installation

A metal candelabra originally designed to hold candles now holds five Chinese incense sticks.
Two different objects enter into a relationship, and their original functions shift along the way.
There is no need to distinguish where either belongs. For a moment, they simply exist here.

Sometimes, all it takes is a change of position for an object to take on another identity.
A metal candelabra originally belongs to candles. Five Chinese incense sticks enter its structure without altering it or introducing a specially designed new function. They are simply placed there, and a familiar object begins to perform something that does not originally belong to it.
The candelabra and the incense sticks come from different traditions: one is a Western everyday object, the other continues an Eastern way of using incense. They are neither deliberately explained nor required to be categorized. Different forms, functions, and cultural contexts are temporarily brought together within a small space.
The work truly begins when it is lit. Smoke rises and scent enters the air. As the incense gradually burns away, the relationship that has formed between them slowly disappears.
What happens in Drop In may be nothing more than a simple act of “entering.” One thing enters another’s position; one function enters another. In between them, a temporary state comes into being.
